Due to the high price increases in sunflower oil, the producer planted more this year. However, this time, drought hit the planted crop. Manufacturers warn that prices may increase even more.
A low yield is expected due to drought in the oil sunflower planted in Adana this year, about 650 thousand acres. Mehmet Akın Doğan, President of Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, said that they do not expect a decrease in oil prices as the yield is not high, and that the yield may increase if it rains until 15 July.
Sunflower fields started to create a visual feast in Adana, where approximately 10% of Turkey's production is met. Oil sunflower, which was planted on 603 thousand acres of land in the city last year, has been planted on 650 thousand acres with an increase of approximately 10 percent this year after the increase in oil prices.
The drought experienced due to global climate change had its effect in Adana as well as in many other provinces. In the city, where sowing, planting and harvesting is carried out for 12 months of the year, low yields are expected in oil sunflowers this year, as precipitation is below the seasonal norms.
In the last years, yields of up to 350 kilograms were obtained at the beginning of the acre, and it is expected to yield a maximum of 200-250 kilograms this year. In some rural areas, it is stated that there are places where the combine harvester cannot enter due to drought.
